How To Install Windows 7

Published on October 31, 2012 in PC

This tutorial will show you how to install Windows 7 on your hard drive. The steps listed below can help you remove an existing OS and replace it with fresh operating system, which is Microsoft’s Blackcomb.

  1. Back up your files. Before you put in fresher OS on your computer, you must make sure that you have a back-up copy of your hard drive.
  2. Locate the product key. This is a 25-digit alphanumeric code that allows you to register your OS. The said code is located on the CD or DVD that came with the OS. The product key may also be found on the sticker attached to your computer’s case.
  3. Boot from the CD/DVD. To begin the process on how to install Windows 7, you need to boot from the CD/DVD, i.e. if you are using a CD or DVD to put in the OS. You may also choose to boot from a USB drive if the OS is located on an external drive.
  4. Change boot order in BIOS. Most of the time, you need to change the order so that the CD/DVD or external is listed first.
  5. Load files. Once you have changed the boot order, your computer boots from the device where your OS is located. It then starts loading the necessary files for the process. You have to wait until the OS finishes downloading the files for the set-up process. At this point, there are no changes made to your computer. The OS is just loading temporary files to your computer’s memory. This is necessary for the set-up process.
  6. Choose the Language, Time and currency format and input method you would like to use in your new OS. Then, click the button “Next.”
  7. Click the button that starts the whole process. After clicking the said button, the set-up process begins. This will take a few minutes to complete. You are not required to press any keys at this point.
  8. Read the agreement. After reading the user’s agreement, you need to check the “I accept the license terms.” This is to confirm that you are agreeing with the terms of Microsoft.
  9. Choose either Upgrade or Custom. For the purpose of this tutorial, you need to choose Custom option.
  10. Pick the right location where you want to put the OS. If your hard drive is partitioned, you need to choose the right partition where the fresh OS will be placed. You may need to format the drive that contains the OS you are replacing. Formatting the drive would mean permanently erasing all files from that drive.
  11. Start the set-up process. The set-up will now place a clean copy of the operating system to the location you have chosen. This process could take a few minutes to an hour, depending on the speed of your computer.
  12. Restart your computer. When the process is nearly complete, your computer should be restarted. You can do it manually or automatically.
  13. Continue the setup. At this point, you do not need to do anything. Everything at this phase is automatic.
  14. Input your user name. Once the screen shows a window that needs you to input your user name, you must choose a name you would like to use. You may type in your complete name or alias. This name is your ID that will help the new OS in identifying you.
  15. Choose a password. You must consider this as a requirement and not just a recommendation from Microsoft. In this way, you can prevent someone from accessing your computer without your permission.
  16. Type in your product key. As mentioned earlier, this key is found on the CD cover that came with your OS. Enter the product key to the appropriate box.
  17. Choose the way you want your OS to protect your computer. Experts recommend choosing putting in important updates only. This is your safest bet as it avoids Microsoft from doing anything with your files found on your computer. The setting, however, can be changed any time.
  18. Pick the right time zone, date and time. Most of the time, the time and date is already correct. But you must still verify it and change whenever necessary.
  19. Choose proper network. If you are using your computer at home, you may choose home or work network. Public network must only be chosen if you are connected to a public connection. This means that the connection is not secured.
  20. Continue set up process. Everything at this point is done automatically. You do not need to press a key at this phase.
  21. Complete final step. Your computer will show the Microsoft logo on your desktop. This completes the final phase of the set-up on how to install Windows 7.
